Description
Anglais VO – Exploring war journalism
Enseignant : Stéphanie NOIRARD
While journalism may broadly be defined as a process of investigating, and selecting information to make it available to the public, war reporting is shaped by military and political strategies as well as by empathy as correspondents are more and more often immersed in action. The media can, moreover, be referred to as a rhetorical front.
Drawing on the analysis of primary sources, the course aims to investigate the definition of war journalism and of its evolution as well as to discuss notions such as truth, objectivity, witnessing, propaganda, memory, or the responsibility and role of war journalists. It will mainly focus on British and American war reportage from the First World War to Syria.
Goals
Getting familiar with war reports, British and American history; apprehending a global media environment in times of crisis; developing strategies to read through implicit narratives; developing analytical skills and critical thinking.
