Enseignante : Elizabeth GIBSON-MORGAN

Key words: Geopolitics – political geography – global politics – classical geopolitics – critical geopolitics – realpolitik – identity politics – international relations – balance of power;

To better understand current geopolitical issues and world interactions between states, a historical approach will be developed. The main concepts and doctrines at the basis of geopolitics will be examined to see how they have inspired world political leaders and guided their strategies as well as their respective foreign policies. The evolution of the balance of power between different geographical areas, states and sub-national entities will also be discussed.

This lecture aims at better understanding the origin of geopolitics, what it means, the interactions between geography and global politics, how it has evolved from a controversial to a fully independent discipline. Case studies will be examined during tutorials involving diplomatic channels and international conflict resolutions.
